In our latest episode of our Calibre Podcast, our International Watch Buyer, Faye Soteri, hosts a conversation between our Head of Watch Buying Mark Toulson, and watch aficionado, Bill Prince.

After a career in music journalism (Sounds, NME and Q), Bill Prince joined British GQ as Features Director in 1997. Alongside Bill’s wide-ranging editorial duties (which involved heading up its luxury, travel, food, drink and watch coverage) he played a key role in developing the multiple platforms on which the brand currently resides. The following year he was promoted to Deputy Editor and was instrumental in launching the GQ Men Of The Year Awards. A regular attendee of its annual watch fairs, Bill continues to attend industry launches worldwide and in 2019 was invited to become an Academy Member of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie Genevé.

2020 has certainly been an unusual year for all and our guests talk through the differences and impact that the year has had on the watch industry. From virtual watch fairs, to brands becoming transactional online, there has been quick and impressive adaptations from the world of watches.

They also highlight some of the new watch releases from this year, of which there has been many. Notable launches this year have come from the likes of Rolex in the Autumn with their new releases of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Rolex Submariner, Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky Dweller and the Rolex Datejust. In September, we saw Cartier relaunch the iconic Pasha collection. For TAG Heuer, this year was all about their Carrera models. OMEGA released several different collaborations and their new Constellation collection for men. Tudor’s focus was on celebrating a 10-year milestone in their partnership with Julien Faure who manufactures their fabric straps and Panerai also had a commemorative year with its focus on their Luminor range. It has been truly fascinating to watch the watch industry thrive and navigate their way through this year, and we are all very much looking forward to putting 2020 to bed, and welcoming a new, positive 2021.
